Bad Gastein weddings
A belle époque spa town built around a waterfall in the middle of it.
Shooting in Bad Gastein
Bad Gastein does not look like the rest of Austria. It is a nineteenth-century spa resort stacked up a steep gorge, with a waterfall running straight through the centre and grand hotels clinging to both sides. Parts of it were derelict for decades and have been reopened as design hotels, which gives the town an unusual mix of faded grandeur and sharp modern interiors.
For a couple who find the standard alpine look too soft, this is the counter-proposal.
When to come
May to June
Full snowmelt means the waterfall is at maximum volume, which is the town at its most dramatic.
July to September
Warm, green, and the quietest season in a town built for winter. Excellent value.
October to November
Colour in the valley and a very empty town. Several hotels close in November.
December to March
Ski season. The town is full, the architecture under snow is remarkable, and rates rise accordingly.
Spots worth the walk

The Gastein waterfall
Directly in the centre, crossed by a bridge that gives you the drop and the hotels together. Loudest and best in early summer.
Belle époque hotel interiors
High ceilings, original detailing, and several recently restored. Interiors here are as strong as the landscape.
Stubnerkogel summit and suspension bridge
Two thousand metres and a 140 metre suspension bridge. Not for everyone, and spectacular for those it suits.
Kötschachtal valley floor
Open meadow and a quiet river fifteen minutes from town. The soft counterpoint to the town's hard edges.
The old station and Nikolauskirche
A small gothic church and the original railway architecture, both underused.
Practical notes
- Bad Gastein is reachable by direct train from Salzburg in about ninety minutes, which is unusual for a mountain town and useful for guests without cars.
- The town is built on a slope. Every walk between locations involves stairs, which matters for a dress and for older guests.
- Several hotels close entirely in November and again in May. Confirm your venue is open for your date.
- The waterfall is loud enough to interfere with ceremony audio. If you want vows near it, plan for radio microphones.

Bad Gastein questions
Very. The design hotels here handle groups of twenty to eighty well, and the town has more architectural variety in walking distance than almost anywhere else in the Alps.
Late May into June, when the snowmelt peaks. By late summer the volume drops noticeably.
Direct trains from Salzburg take about ninety minutes and run frequently. By car it is roughly the same. Salzburg is the nearest airport.
